Understanding Oklahoma Handgun Permit Process, Legal Framework and Its Importance in the Era of Constitutional Carry
SDA Handgun Permit vs “Constitutional Carry”

What is an SDA Permit?
SDA Permit allows individuals to carry a firearm for self-defense within Oklahoma. Unlike the state’s permitless carry, the SDA permit provides the added benefit of reciprocity, enabling the permit holder to legally carry a firearm in other states that recognize Oklahoma’s permit.
What is Oklahoma permitless carry?
Oklahoma permitless carry, also known as “constitutional carry” or conceal carry, allows individuals who are at least 21 years old, or 18 if in the military, to carry a concealed or openly carried firearm without the need for a permit. While no license is required, individuals must still comply with state and federal firearm regulations.
Does SDA Permit require education?
Obtaining an Oklahoma SDA permit requires completing an eight-hour instructional course, including a live-fire range exercise where participants must fire 50 rounds. The course is NOT required for veterans, who may submit an “honorable” DD214 in lieu of a completion certificate. A certificate of completion from this course is required when applying for the SDA permit through the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI).
Can I simply do the classroom?
No, the education provided is an important aspect, but the individual must demonstrate the ability to safely and correctly handle a firearm.
So, does this course teach pistol shooting?
THIS COURSE DOES NOT TEACH MARKSMANSHIP OR THE USE OF AN INDIVIDUAL FIREARM (Students should be familiar with the operation of their firearm ahead of attendance).
